Rooihuiskraal Memorial Farm
Near: Centurion, Gauteng, South Africa

This is one of those typical magic places I discovered by randomly pointing the GPS to a green spot close by and just driving there.

Here we found the heritage grounds where the Battle of Rooihuiskraal was fought in the First Boer War in 1881. It has wide open lawns where people just come to braai meat or have a picnic with the family, between free running antelope. On the grounds I found an old farm house made into a Chinese Restaurant where I had coffee.

Further on I found many big cages and stables with rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, turkeys, Blue Crane, the weirdest goats and chickens from fancy heritage and blood lines, horses and donkeys that you can pet, and the largest black boar pig I’ve ever seen!!

The best of this strange place in the middle of our city is the long walk between 8 foot reed fences up to a little pond where there is a bird hide. I sat here for more than an hour, looking at the weavers, coots, ducks and other birds that was casually unaware of our presence.

Afterwards I had pasta made with wine, with some Sangria to drink at The Reds, the big mall less than a kilometer away.
